A little more than a year ago, the world had one billionaire in the $300+ billion club and several billionaires in the $200 billion club. Today there are no more $300 billionaires and no more $200 billionaires. That’s not the only interesting way that the wealthiest of the wealthy have gotten a little less so over the last year. In the middle part of 2021, the rising tide of the global economy rose to the point of all ten of the top richest people having net worths north of $100 billion for the first time in history.
First off, Apple’s stock price ended 2021 up 33%. And keep in mind that Apple started the year with a market cap of $2.4 trillion, so increasing a full 33% on top of an already massive number is not exactly an easy achievement. Apple’s market cap has increased by around $600 billion compared to a year ago today. That’s like adding the combined values of Coca-Cola, Exxon and Walt Disney to its market cap in 12 months.

The four-acre property was first purchased as a vacant lot back in 1989 by Victoria and her then-husband Carmine Agnello. They paid $175,000 for the lot. Over the next several years, they built Victoria’s dream mansion from scratch. The final product measured around 7,000 square feet of over-the-top, gaudy splendor. After the couple’s divorce in 2003, Gotti became the home’s sole owner, and eventually managed to find herself a new calling as a reality TV star.
Some leagues are taking note of this, and have established new rules over the past few years. The NHL provides the compliance buyout, which allows a team to pay a player two-thirds of the money owed to a released player owed over twice the amount of time. The NBA, meanwhile, as the amnesty clause–the player being tossed to the curb still earns his entire salary (paid by the team releasing him), but his contract doesn’t count against the salary cap.
At least several million of that total number will come from Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale. Earlier this week, we wrote about the furniture magnate making a $4.5 million bet on the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl. That was the largest mobile bet ever—and because gambling is illegal in Texas, McIngvale had to drive to neighboring Louisiana to legally make the bets. Despite Cincinnati sitting at 4.5-point underdogs to the Los Angeles Rams, it seems McIngvale has even more confidence in Joe Burrow and company to get the job done.

The most high-profile celeb to be deleted was “Vicki” Zhao Wei. Vicki was like the Chinese Reese Witherspoon in that she was a film star, producer and entrepreneur. Vicki and her husband used their fame and connections to score an equity stake in Jack Ma’s new company Alibaba Pictures. That stake eventually grew to be worth over $1 billion after private fundraising rounds. This did not please the Chinese government which has fallen-out with Ma in the last year.
Current owners, billionaires Gary and Karen Winnick, have placed it on the market with an asking price of $250 million. If it sells at that price, will make it the most expensive private residence ever sold in the United States, and even more incredibly, it will be the third time this legendary property has held that record. David Murdock first put Casa Encantada in the real estate history books when he paid $12.
