John Overdeck earned his fortune as the co-founder and co-chairman of the New York City based hedge fund Two Sigma Investments. Two Sigma uses technology such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and distributed computer to execute its trading strategies. The company has more than $60 billion in assets under management. That makes it the third-largest hedge fund in the world by assets. John Overdeck graduated from Stanford University and was a silver medalist at the International Mathematics Olympiad. He earned a bachelor’s degree in math and statistics at Stanford before enrolling in Stanford’s graduate school to earn a Ph.D in math. Before earning his degree, John was recruited away from Stanford to work for hedge fund D.E. Shaw & Co., where he soon rose to Managing Director of risk. One of his bosses at D.E. Shaw was a 30-year-old Jeff Bezos, who was then the company’s youngest Vice President. In 2001 John co-founded Two Sigma Investments with David Siegel and Mark Pickard in 2001. Pickard retired in 2006. He is a philanthropist who is the director of the Robin Hood Foundation and established the Overdeck Family Foundation which gifted $1 million in 2018 to help fund research on education issues for the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
